Inaugur\u00e9 le 25 avril 1927, emprunt\u00e9 quotidiennement par des barges et p\u00e9niches charg\u00e9es de marchandises, il divise le temps de trajet par deux.<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udea2D\u00e8s le 17e appara\u00eet l&rsquo;id\u00e9e d&rsquo;un canal reliant Marseille au Rh\u00f4ne par l&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur des terres, afin d\u2019\u00e9viter les d\u00e9chargements et rembarquement des bateaux, on\u00e9reux car chronophage. En 1879, l\u2019id\u00e9e devient n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 \u00e9conomique, bien aid\u00e9e par les avanc\u00e9es techniques qui rendent possible le percement du massif calcaire de l\u2019Estaque. Les travaux d\u00e9butent en 1911, mobilisant 1 500 ouvriers, 24h\/24 (sauf le dimanche quand m\u00eame\u2026). Ils dureront 16 ans.<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83c\udfd7\ufe0fLes ouvriers sont majoritairement immigr\u00e9s (Espagnols, italiens, portugais mais aussi Kabyles et peuples des colonies fran\u00e7aises) qui suffoquent dans la poussi\u00e8re et les fum\u00e9es, malgr\u00e9 les puits d\u2019a\u00e9ration. Les accidents mortels sont fr\u00e9quents, les gr\u00e8ves aussi. Apr\u00e8s la Guerre de 14-18, le chantier est m\u00e9canis\u00e9 pour pallier la p\u00e9nurie de main d\u2019\u0153uvre.<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc1f Le 16 juin 1963, un effondrement le coupe en deux, obstruant totalement le passage. Il ferme \u00e0 tout trafic\u2026 jusqu\u2019aujourd\u2019hui. En 2016, un projet pr\u00e9voyant de transporter 4 \u00e0 10 m3 d&rsquo;eau par seconde gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 des pompes est d\u00e9velopp\u00e9. Sans l\u2019ambition de relancer la navigation, il aspire simplement \u00e0 r\u00e9tablir la circulation des courants, afin de mieux oxyg\u00e9ner l\u2019\u00e9tang de Berre.
